Bangladesh launches subsidised food sales for 3.5 million low-income families

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will commence selling essential goods at reduced prices across nine cities starting February 17, 2023. The initiative aims to support around 3.5 million low-income consumers with subsidised food items over a three-week period.

The programme will launch in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar, in front of TCB Bhaban, on February 17. Sales will continue for 20 working days, running until March 12, excluding Fridays and public holidays.

A total of 450 mobile trucks will operate nationwide. Dhaka will have 50 trucks, Chattogram 20, and seven other metropolitan areas will each receive 15. The remaining 55 districts will share five trucks among them. Each vehicle will serve up to 400 customers daily.

The subsidised goods include edible oil at Tk 115 per litre, sugar at Tk 80 per kg, lentils at Tk 70 per kg, chickpeas at Tk 60 per kg, and dates at Tk 160 for half a kg. Around 23,000 tonnes of products will be distributed under the scheme.

The TCB's mobile sales programme will run until March 12, providing discounted essentials to millions. The initiative targets low-income households in major cities and districts across Bangladesh.
