Baltimore's $1B Port Expansion Kicks Off with 8,000 New Jobs on Horizon
A major new container terminal has broken ground at the Port of Baltimore. The Sparrows Point project, a joint venture between Tradepoint Atlantic and Terminal Investment Limited, aims to transform the port into the third-largest on the East Coast. Officials gathered on Friday to mark the start of construction on the 168-acre site.
The terminal will feature seven cranes and two deep berths, each 52 feet, capable of handling two large container ships at once. Once fully operational, it will boost the port’s container capacity by 70% and create around 8,000 jobs, including roles for the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 333. The union expects up to 500 new positions when the terminal opens in the coming years.
Funding for the project includes over $1 billion in private investment, along with state and federal contributions. It also secured the largest tax credit ever awarded in Baltimore County. The developers plan to prioritise ships from Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s biggest shipping line and a partial owner of the terminal operator. The first vessels are set to arrive by 2028, with full completion targeted for 2030. The project is projected to generate $1.5 billion in economic activity for the region. However, its focus on MSC ships may put pressure on existing facilities run by Ports America Chesapeake. Union leaders have welcomed the development, hoping it will attract further public investment to expand the port’s overall capacity.
The Sparrows Point terminal represents a significant expansion for the Port of Baltimore. With thousands of new jobs and a major increase in container handling, the project is poised to reshape the region’s shipping industry. Construction will continue over the next six years, with the first ships due in 2028.
