Kretschmann hits back: "Can't make everything a top priority" - Baden-Württemberg's Climate Progress Mixed: Praise and Criticism
Baden-Württemberg's climate policy has seen mixed progress, with praise from its leader Winfried Kretschmann but criticism from the Climate Council. While some sectors have met or exceeded climate goals, the transport sector lags behind, particularly in electromobility. Meanwhile, charging stations for electric vehicles remain a mystery, with no precise numbers available for the region.
Kretschmann commended his administration's climate efforts, citing breakthroughs in several sectors. However, the Climate Council slammed the government for not staying on track with climate protection. Despite this, three out of five key sectors have nearly reached or surpassed their climate targets. The transport sector, however, remains a hurdle, with a crucial need for electromobility growth.
The Climate Council expressed disappointment that Kretschmann had not prioritised climate protection more. Kretschmann, in response, dismissed the criticism, stating that as the sole ruler, he cannot make everything a top priority. Meanwhile, the expansion of wind power in the region has gathered momentum, with applications for 1284 wind turbines surpassing the coalition agreement.
Baden-Württemberg's climate policy has shown progress in some areas but faces challenges in others. With no clear data on charging stations and mixed reviews from the Climate Council, the region's path to meeting its climate goals remains uncertain.
