B.C. unveils bold plan to ease timber shortages for struggling mills
The British Columbia government is introducing new rules to boost timber supplies for struggling mills. The changes come as the province faces a severe shortage of wood fibre, with supplies dropping by over 40% since 2018. Officials aim to ease pressure on the industry by increasing access to available timber.
Global and local demand for wood products continues to climb, yet mills have struggled with dwindling resources. The government's move seeks to provide a more stable flow of wood for workers and businesses alike. Under the new measures, BC Timber Sales will auction contracts for forestry thinning, wildfire risk reduction, and salvaging damaged timber. These contracts will be open to forestry contractors and value-added mills, creating more work opportunities across the sector. The changes could add up to 17,700 truckloads of fibre to the market, offering some relief to mills facing shortages.
The adjustments also aim to strengthen partnerships with First Nations while supporting loggers and contractors. With global wood consumption reaching around four billion cubic metres annually—and demand expected to grow—the province's industry has been under strain. Markets like wood flooring, for example, have expanded from $33.28 billion in 2019 to an estimated $41.68 billion by 2027, driven by rising populations and a shift toward renewable materials.
The Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, remains a major consumer of wood products, though specific data on B.C.'s exports is limited. The province's new approach seeks to address both local and international pressures by making more fibre available to workers and businesses. The legislative changes will provide a more consistent timber supply for B.C.'s mills and contractors. By increasing access to wood fibre, the government hopes to help the industry navigate ongoing shortages. The move also supports jobs and partnerships while responding to rising global demand for wood products.
