Automaker Stellantis initiates recall of approximately 140,000 diesel-powered vehicles
Stellantis, the parent company of automotive brands Opel, DS, Citroën, Peugeot, and Fiat, has announced a recall of approximately 141,700 diesel cars in Germany due to potential issues with the timing chain in vehicles equipped with the 1.5-liter BlueHDi diesel engine.
The recall, which affects models from 2017 to 2023, is aimed at addressing the issues with the timing chain, which could potentially lead to severe engine damage. The affected vehicles have been reported to exhibit abnormal engine noises such as rattling, knocking, or squealing sounds, and may experience noticeable power loss while driving.
In severe cases, a broken timing chain can cause major engine damage, potentially leading to costly repairs. Premature wear or failure of the timing chain can also result in valve failure, which could potentially lead to complete engine failure.
To rectify the issue, owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted in waves and invited to take their cars to workshops for repair. Older vehicles will be prioritized for contact. The repair work will involve checking the chains based on engine noise and replacing them if necessary.
Stellantis is offering extensive warranty promises for the repair work, and is also extending the warranty for the affected models to a period of ten years or 240,000 kilometers. Customers who have had problems with the camshaft chain since 2023 can apply for a refund of the costs from mid-July.
This recall comes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and reliability of the affected vehicles. Stellantis urges owners of the affected models to keep their vehicles up to date with the recall and to seek immediate assistance if they notice any unusual engine noises or power loss while driving.
