Austria’s private preschool teachers secure pay rise amid cost-of-living crisis
Preschool teachers and teaching assistants in Austria’s private childcare sector are set for a pay rise. The increase follows negotiations aimed at protecting wages against rising living costs. Unions have welcomed the move as a necessary step in the current economic climate.
From this month, preschool teachers in private facilities will earn at least 3.5% more. Their minimum starting salary will now reach €3,170 per month. Teaching assistants, meanwhile, will see a slightly higher boost of 3.7%, bringing their minimum wage to €2,216.
Private providers run 41% of Austria’s early childhood centres. Yet not all employees in these facilities benefit from collective bargaining. The latest pay deal covers only those under existing agreements.
The GPA union stressed that the raise helps maintain purchasing power for teachers. Vida, another union involved, called the adjustment an important signal during tough economic times.
The wage increases take effect immediately for eligible staff. Preschool teachers will now start on at least €3,170, while assistants earn a minimum of €2,216. The changes apply to private childcare workers covered by collective agreements.
