Austria Recovers Only a Third of Unpaid Child Support Funds
In 2025, Austria paid out €116 million to Austrian children, €15.7 million to children from other EU countries, and €7.5 million to children from non-EU nations. Of the 41,288 children who received support, 33,482 were Austrian citizens. The system allows the president of the regional Higher Regional Court to approve these payments for up to five years after an application.
Austria’s child support advance system provided crucial help to thousands of families last year, though recovery rates varied widely. With a new €35 million fund set for 2026, the government aims to strengthen support for vulnerable women and children. The measures reflect ongoing efforts to reduce financial hardship when parents fail to meet their obligations.
