Audiobooks Top E-books in Yakutia as Reading Habits Evolve

Audiobooks have overtaken e-books in popularity in the region, with demand surging by 15%. Meanwhile, paper book sales have dipped by 8% in the Republic of Yakutia in the first eight months of 2025.

The shift in reading habits is evident in the Republic's e-book market. The share of e-books increased by a significant 66.5% in the same period. Interestingly, it was residents of average income who were the most active e-book buyers, with high-income readers (over 400,000 rubles/month) accounting for only about 2% of sales.

Fantasy, detective, and science fiction emerged as the most popular genres among Yakutian readers. Despite the growth in e-book sales, the average online book purchase was almost half the price of a regular store purchase: 345 rubles versus 615 rubles. This affordability may have contributed to the increased demand for e-books and audible books. Despite the format shift, the average number of books read by a resident of the Republic of Yakutia has risen by 13%.

The Republic of Yakutia's reading scene is evolving, with audiobooks leading the way. E-books, though less popular than audiobooks, still see significant growth. Paper books face a decline, but the overall number of books read by residents increases. The shift in formats and genres offers a glimpse into the changing literary tastes of Yakutian readers.
