At 1 PM, director of VNW Andreas Breitner and mayoral candidate Ulf Daude confer with the leadership of the WOGE housing cooperative Kiel eG

In a recent meeting, the Association of North German Housing Companies (VNW) discussed the planned demolition and new construction project in Lornsenstraße, Kiel, with Ulf Daude (SPD mayoral candidate), Sven Auen (Chair of WOGE Wohnungs-Genossenschaft Kiel eG), Anja Wiese (full-time board member of WOGE Kiel), and VNW Director Andreas Breitner.

The discussion focused on the planned demolition of existing buildings in Lornsenstraße and the subsequent new construction project, which aims to modernize the housing stock, improve living conditions, and meet current housing demands in Kiel. The project, spearheaded by WOGE Wohnungs-Genossenschaft Kiel eG, is committed to providing affordable and sustainable housing.

The meeting addressed concerns about the impact of the demolition and new construction on current residents and the surrounding community. WOGE Wohnungs-Genossenschaft Kiel eG has taken steps to mitigate the social hardships associated with the project, offering replacement apartments to affected residents and assisting them with their move.

Ulf Daude's presence at the meeting signaled political backing or interest in the project, while Andreas Breitner represented the broader interests of the VNW, focusing on housing industry perspectives. The meeting also likely included discussions on the timeline, necessary approvals, and collaboration between civic authorities, housing cooperatives, and other stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.

The VNW, with over 467 housing cooperatives and housing companies in Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein, manages 775,000 apartments where around two million people reside. The energy transition requires high-quality new buildings, leading to the demolition and construction of older residential buildings. The expert planners' investigations show that the existing building in Lornsenstraße cannot be upgraded without further ado for safety reasons, as insulation panels cannot be attached.

The VNW supports the decision made by the board of the WOGE Wohnungs-Genossenschaft Kiel eG. Through the new construction, 80 apartments, many of which are publicly funded, will be created in a popular area among Kieler residents. The average net cold rent per square meter in VNW companies is 6.74 euros.

The ambitious climate protection goals set by the city of Kiel can only be achieved through the construction of modern buildings. The new construction in Lornsenstraße is a step towards a greener, more sustainable future for Kiel.
