Astana cracks down on illegal parking with 56,500 violations recorded
Astana Implements Comprehensive Measures to Enhance Road Safety and Traffic Discipline
A systematic effort to improve road safety and enforce traffic regulations is underway in Astana, with one of the key initiatives being the operational-preventive campaign "Parking." At a briefing held at the city's Communication Service, Lieutenant Colonel Makhambet Tuleshov, Deputy Head of the Administrative Police Department under Astana's Police Department, and Lieutenant Colonel Bauyrzhan Tokzhumanov, Head of the Administrative Practice Division of the same department, presented the results of the campaign. Their remarks were reported by our website, citing the official portal of the capital's akimat (city administration).
The primary objective of the "Parking" operation was to identify violations of vehicle stopping and parking rules that obstruct traffic flow and pedestrian movement.
Police officers paid special attention to illegal parking in prohibited areas—sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops, and residential courtyards where parked cars hinder the passage of emergency and service vehicles.
In parallel, authorities cracked down on other traffic violations, including disregard for road signs and markings, improper maneuvering, and infractions at intersections and crosswalks.
"As part of the operation, compliance with passenger transport regulations was also monitored. Drivers were reminded of the mandatory use of seat belts and child restraint systems," the officials noted.
Preventive efforts extended beyond enforcement, with officers explaining current traffic rules aimed at reducing road accidents.
To prevent offenses and avoid vehicle towing, drivers were briefed on basic parking regulations. Vehicles must be parked exclusively in designated areas marked by signs and road markings. Violations may result in administrative penalties, ranging from fines to the impoundment of vehicles to municipal lots, the speakers clarified.
Following the operation, law enforcement officers identified over 1,500 traffic violations. The majority—685 cases—involved disregard for road signs and markings. Another significant portion, exceeding 700 incidents, pertained to stopping and parking violations. The most common offenses included parking on sidewalks, children's playgrounds, sports fields, and active roadways.
According to the Police Department, since the beginning of this year, more than 56,500 administrative protocols for parking violations have been recorded in the capital. Of these, over 11,900 cases directly involved improper stopping and parking. Authorities emphasize that these figures underscore the need for stricter oversight and improved driver discipline.
As part of the enforcement campaign, 53 vehicles were towed to municipal impound lots, while 922 others were prohibited from operation after their license plates were confiscated. These measures aim to hold drivers more accountable and prevent repeat offenses.
Authorities are also prioritizing preventive efforts: awareness campaigns have been organized for motorists, distributing informational leaflets and brochures. Additionally, public service videos on traffic rules are being broadcast in public transport, residential elevators, and major shopping and entertainment centers, officials reported.
Police have reminded the public that compliance with traffic regulations is a duty for all road users and a critical factor in ensuring road safety.
Earlier reports indicated that Astana had introduced paid towing for vehicles violating parking and stopping rules.
