Approval granted for battery storage facility development by Downing Renewable Developments
Downing Renewable Developments (DRD) and FCC Environment have joined forces to deploy renewable energy projects, with a focus on battery storage, onshore wind, and solar farms. The partnership's latest achievement is the approval of a significant battery storage park near Rowley Regis, West Midlands.
Named the Edwin Richards Energy Storage Park, the facility boasts a capacity of up to 100 MW and 200 MWh, making it capable of storing enough energy to power around 300,000 homes for two hours. This project marks the first approved site in DRD's renewable energy portfolio developed in partnership with FCC Environment.
The partnership's vision extends beyond this current project. They aim to roll out a wide range of installations that repurpose closed landfill sites, transforming them into valuable environmental assets through renewable energy infrastructure. The West Midlands region serves as the initial geographic focus, but the partnership's scope includes potential developments in other landfill sites across the UK.
Downing is committed to expanding its clean energy infrastructure through its Downing-managed energy funds. Upon completion, the Edwin Richards Energy Storage Park will be owned and operated by one of these funds. DRD manages £920m in renewable energy assets, a testament to their dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
It's worth noting that the partnership's projects are designed to align with FCC Environment's operational needs and community commitments. The location of the facility near Rowley Regis ensures its integration into the local environment and community.
Last year, DRD secured planning consent for a 49.9 MW solar farm in Norfolk, adding to their growing portfolio of renewable projects across the UK. With a 6GW pipeline of renewable projects, DRD and FCC Environment UK are poised to make a significant impact on the UK's renewable energy landscape.
