Apple Allegedly Favoring Certain Apps; OpenAI Emerging as Popular Choice According to Elon Musk
In a recent turn of events, tech mogul Elon Musk has accused Apple and OpenAI of antitrust violations, primarily focusing on the alleged favoritism of the App Store towards OpenAI's ChatGPT app.
According to Musk's claims, the favoritism makes it impossible for other AI companies, such as his own xAI startup, to reach the top spots on the App Store rankings. He has even threatened legal action against the tech giants.
However, Apple has denied these allegations, stating that their App Store rankings and app featuring use objective criteria. They also pointed out that other AI apps, like Perplexity and DeepSeek, have reached top App Store positions, countering Musk’s allegations of bias.
The partnership between Apple and OpenAI for integrating OpenAI's models, including ChatGPT, into Apple products such as Siri and iOS, has been confirmed since June 2024.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, responded to Musk’s accusations by calling them remarkable. He also referenced Musk's own attempts to manipulate his platform for competitive gain.
Meanwhile, some users have posted memes asking Musk's Grok AI about the validity of Sam Altman's claims.
It's important to note that while Apple and OpenAI have a partnership, there is no independent evidence proving a deliberate collaboration to maintain OpenAI's lead in the AI sector as Musk suggests. Musk’s claims mostly concern Apple's App Store practices, which remain under regulatory and public scrutiny.
