AP-HP Leads Europe's Research Hospitals in Patent Filings Boom

Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) has emerged as Europe's most prolific research hospital, leading a surge in patent filings by public research organisations (PROs) over the past two decades. Between 2001 and 2020, European PROs submitted nearly 63,000 European patent applications, with the top 16 organisations accounting for over two-thirds of these filings. This trend reflects a significant increase in annual applications, from around 2,000 in 2001 to more than 3,500 by 2020. Research hospitals, in particular, boosted their patenting activity by almost 50% during this period. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom were the leading contributors, accounting for more than half of all research hospital applications. The EPO Observatory's Deep Tech Finder now lists over 10,400 investment-ready startups linked to public research, highlighting the commercial potential of PRO innovations. The rise in patent filings by European PROs, particularly research hospitals, underscores their growing role in driving innovation and economic growth. France's National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) led the way with over 10,200 European patent applications, reflecting a nearly doubling of patent applications from PROs between 2001 and 2020.
