Celebrating the Orchard Miracle: Odisha's Mango Festival Unveils Yearly Harvest and Future Export Prospects

Ready, set, mango! The annual extravaganza – the Mango Festival – kicked off on June 10, 2025, at the NABARD Regional Office Campus in Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar, showcasing Odisha's stellar mango production. Running through June 12, this event is more than just a tasty treat; it's a strategic networking platform for mango growers, aimed at ensuring better prices and accessing wider markets.

This three-day jamboree is an essential component of NABARD's flagship Tribal Development Fund (TDF) initiative, launched in 2003-04 to promote small orchard-based livelihoods known as the Wadi among tribal families. The Wadi initiative has profoundly impacted the lives of over 57,000 tribal families across 83 projects in 23 districts, transforming degraded lands into income-generating assets, particularly through mango cultivation.

Empowering Farmers: Cutting Out Middlemen and Cracking Open Global Markets

This event isn't merely a fruit spectacle; it's a celebration of the transformation mango cultivation has brought to countless tribal families. By bridging the gap between farmers and urban consumers, it eliminates middlemen for fairer prices and direct customer feedback on produce quality.

Sanjay Kumar Talukdar, CGM NABARD, shared, "This festival is not just about showcasing fruit; it's about celebrating the impact mango cultivation has had on thousands of tribal families. It embodies our mission to enhance rural incomes and create sustainable livelihoods through robust market linkages."

Making a Grand Entrance: From Street Stalls to Global Shelves

This year's festival boasts 50 participants from 20 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and representatives from various TDF project areas showcasing their carefully grown mangoes. With NABARD joining forces with Palladium as the organizing partner, these delectable fruits are making their way to urban markets and ambitious international buyers.

A Rainbow of Mangoes: Nature's Delight in the Heart of India

The festival features an extensive array of mango varieties, including local favorites like Amrapalli, Dussehri, and Langda. Farmers/farmer collectives, brimming with zest and enthusiasm, share not only their mouthwatering produce but also their heartwarming stories – stories of tradition, resilience, and pride.

With Odisha emerging as a significant mango-growing hub with unique varieties and growing global appeal, the Mango Festival is a step towards realizing its full market potential.
