Amount of salary funds spent on shopping by Krasnodar residents
In a fascinating exploration of consumer behavior and income levels across key Russian regions, a recent study by hh.ru and CDEK.Shopping reveals some intriguing patterns. Let's dive into the shopping habits and income trends of Moscow, Krasnodar Krai, Bashkortostan, Perm Krai, and Saint Petersburg.
Moscow, being Russia's economic powerhouse, displays a unique consumer landscape. Approximately 36% of Muscovites allocate only 5-10% of their salary to shopping, while another 26% allocate 11-20%. Strikingly, a meager 4% of these residents spend more than half of their income on purchases.
Compared to the capital, the Krasnodar Krai, Bashkortostan, Perm Krai, and Saint Petersburg exhibit more frugal consumer behavior. Interestingly, Bashkortostan (67%) and Saint Petersburg (51%) are particularly economical, spending less than 10% of their salary on shopping.
When it comes to shopping destinations, Krasnodar Krai residents predominantly frequent marketplaces (84%), followed by shopping malls (57%) and foreign online stores (10%). Locals commonly opt for Russian niche (30%) and mass-market brands (23%), along with international brands (18%).
Clothing and footwear are the primary purchases for Krasnodar Krai residents, with 66% spending on everyday clothing and 55% on footwear. Many also invest in cosmetics (32%), outerwear (25%), and accessories (22%).
Interestingly, 43% of Krasnodar Krai residents have a laid-back approach to work attire, while 14% strive to stand out through their clothing, and 9% aim to impress colleagues by purchasing expensive items.
Opinions on work attire expenses are divided among locals, with 56% believing the company should cover all expenses for work clothing, while 16% think the employer should at least partially contribute.
Knowing the regional income context is essential to understanding these shopping patterns. Typically, income levels in Moscow are much higher than in other regions. As of May 2025, the median offered salary in the capital was 100,000 rubles, compared to 75,000 rubles nationwide and 69,000 in the Krasnodar Krai. This higher income in Moscow leads to lower proportions being spent on shopping, as noted by hh.ru South Director Olesya Lavrenova.
- Despite the high income levels in Moscow, a significant portion of its residents allocate only a small percentage of their salary to shopping, with 82% spending 10% or less.
- In regions such as Krasnodar Krai, Bashkortostan, Perm Krai, and Saint Petersburg, residents are more economical in their shopping habits, with a majority spending less than 10% of their salary on purchases.
- The Krasnodar Krai residents prefer a mix of Russian niche brands, mass-market brands, and international brands for their shopping, with clothing and footwear being their primary expenses.
