Buick Debuts Electra L7 Extended-Range Sedan in China

Buick, a brand under General Motors, has entered the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market in China with the debut of the Electra L7. The sedan, one of the first models in China to incorporate the Qualcomm SA8775P cockpit chip, is set to commence pre-sales on September 28, with an official market launch scheduled for the fourth quarter.

The Electra L7 offers a BEV driving experience without range anxiety, thanks to its advanced driver assistance system developed by Momenta. With a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery, the Electra L7's combined range exceeds 1,400 kilometers.

The EREV features an electric motor that produces a maximum power of 252 kW (338 horsepower), and it utilizes GM's 40.2-kWh Ultium battery pack, delivering a battery range of up to 302 kilometers. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 5.9 seconds.

Measuring 5,032 mm in length, 1,952 mm in width, and 1,500 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, the Electra L7 offers full-scenario driver assistance capabilities, including Urban NOA and parking assistance.

The Electra L7 was indicated to be priced around RMB 300,000 ($41,790) when previewed in July. However, pricing details remain undisclosed at the moment. The vehicle is now accepting reservations.

The EREV market has gained significant popularity in China, with more automakers entering the segment. Other international brands, such as Toyota, Volkswagen, and Mazda, have also announced EREV launches in China.

Interestingly, Xpeng, another automaker, will launch an extended-range SUV called the G7 in the first quarter of 2026. This model features an 800-volt high-voltage architecture and a battery that supports ultra-fast 5C charging, with a battery-only range of up to 430 kilometers.

Despite more automakers entering the EREV segment, market growth has slowed this year. From January to August, China's EREV retail sales totaled 732,000 units, marking a 7.33 percent year-on-year increase. However, this is a significant decrease compared to the 32.20 percent year-on-year surge in BEV retail sales during the same period, which totaled 4,612,000 units.

In summary, the Electra L7 is Buick's latest offering in the EREV market in China. With its advanced features, competitive performance, and promising range, it is poised to make a significant impact in the market. Pre-sales for the Electra L7 will commence on September 28, with its official market launch scheduled for the fourth quarter.
