Almaty Revamps Public Transport for Safety and Sustainability by 2025

Almaty is revamping its public transport system to enhance safety and sustainability. The city aims to replace all diesel buses with cleaner alternatives by 2025, while also improving driver conditions and increasing vehicle maintenance.

The city's LLP 'Almaty Electric Transport' has already hired 100 drivers in February, with plans to recruit another 400 in the coming months. This move aims to improve social and living conditions for drivers.

Last month, 100 buses underwent repairs, with another 90 expected to return to service in the next three months and an additional 100 by the end of the year. This proactive maintenance will help ensure the fleet's reliability.

Almaty Akim B. Sagintayev has ordered the installation of video surveillance cameras in all buses to reduce accidents. Additionally, daily work is being carried out to improve the quality and safety of passenger transport, increase digitization, and maintain public transport stops in good condition.

Currently, Almaty's public transport fleet consists of 352 gas-powered buses, 1,373 diesel buses, 14 electric buses, and 160 trams, serving approximately 1.1 million daily transactions. Private carriers plan to purchase 246 clean fuel buses this year, including 208 gas-powered and 38 electric buses, further boosting the city's green credentials.

A recent meeting chaired by Almaty's top official discussed updating public transport, addressing staff shortages, and improving road safety. The Police Department and relevant agencies have been tasked with strengthening responsibility for faulty vehicles and drivers violating traffic rules. With these initiatives, Almaty is committed to providing its residents with a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport system.
