Alleged new accusations against Benko, focused on questionable million-dollar transactions under scrutiny
Hitting René Benko With Fresh Charges:
The heat is on for René Benko, the disgraced Austrian real estate tycoon, as new allegations surface, spurring a broadening investigation by the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor's Office (WKStA).
Old and new suspicions are stacking up against Benko, the founder of the insolvent Signa real estate and retail group. WKStA has hinted at several new lines of inquiry, including allegations of favoritism, misappropriation, and dubious transactions.
One of the most notable accusations revolves around an astounding €15 million payment from Signa Prime Selection AG – the group's real estate flagship – to a foundation linked to Benko's family circle. The authorities suspect that Benko and his accomplices may have intentionally favored the foundation, to the detriment of other creditors.
Additionally, the WKStA is scrutinizing questionable financial dealings such as a low-rent agreement for a luxury property in the Austrian Alps leased to Benko and the Signa group. Investigators are probing Benko for possible misappropriation in this matter.
However, the saga doesn’t end there. The WKStA has its eye on a €17 million loan used to finance the private home of a Signa advisor, another instance where misappropriation allegations are raised.
Lastly, a Signa employee is under investigation for reportedly inducing apartment buyers to make disproportionate payments.
With eight probe strands already in the works, including claims of a “money carousel,” suspected fraud in relation to coronavirus subsidies, and investment fraud linked to a real estate project in Munich, Benko's legal woes continue to mount.
Benko currently remains in custody in Vienna, and the Ministry of Justice is under pressure to decide on prosecution, given his detention status. Expect more reports to surface as the WKStA completes its investigations and issues additional preliminary reports, which could potentially shed light on other alleged luxury property transactions or payments. Stay tuned for updates in this developing story.
