Alleged Evil Corp Mastermind Spotted in Moscow, Kremlin's Cybersecurity Crackdown Continues
In a surprising turn of events, Maksim Yakubets, the alleged mastermind behind Evil Corp, was reportedly seen driving a distinctive fluorescent camouflage Lamborghini with a 'THIEF' license plate in Moscow. This sighting comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding the Kremlin's handling of cybersecurity issues and the imprisonment of cybersecurity figures.
Ilya Sachkov, the founder and former CEO of Group-IB, a renowned cybersecurity and digital forensics company, was convicted of treason and sentenced to 14 years in prison. The exact charges against him remain officially undisclosed, but they are widely speculated to involve allegations of treason related to his cybersecurity activities. Sachkov had publicly criticized the Kremlin for not addressing ransomware attacks originating from Russia prior to his arrest.
In a similar case, Sergei Mikhailov and Ruslan Stoyanov, both high-ranking officials in the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), were sentenced to 22 and 14 years respectively in 2019 for alleged treason charges. The reasons for their sentences remain undisclosed. Both men maintained their innocence throughout their trials, mirroring Sachkov's stance.
Group-IB, under Sachkov's leadership, was known for disrupting large-scale cybercrime operations. However, following Sachkov's imprisonment, the company relocated its headquarters to Singapore and exited the Russian market in April 2023. Sachkov was initially denied communication with the outside world and visits from family and friends during his detainment.
The imprisonment of cybersecurity figures and the relocation of Group-IB raise questions about the Kremlin's stance on cybersecurity and its treatment of those who criticize its policies. Despite the lack of official disclosure, the alleged treason charges against these individuals have sparked international concern and speculation.
