Air Force Aid Society Introduces New Financial Services and Child Care Assistance Initiatives

In a significant move, the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) has announced an expansion of its financial aid options for Air Force and Space Force members, effective June 2025. This expansion aims to address a broader range of needs that reflect the evolving challenges faced by service members and their families.

Key new financial aid options include mental health counseling support, adoption fees, domestic violence relocation support, childcare support, immigration fees, basic household furniture, essential home repairs, overseas car rental assistance, and vehicle shipment costs for permanent change-of-station (PCS) moves.

One of the most notable additions is the "Give Parents a Break" program, providing $40 per dependent child per month for up to three months for any form of child care, including flying in a family member. The program aims to alleviate some of the stress caused by the PCS season for Airmen and Guardians. Additionally, the Child Care for PCS program offers $200 per child up to age 12 for a maximum of $1,000 per household during a permanent move, retirement, separation, or transfer to the Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard.

AFAS has also simplified its application process by combining all financial assistance requests into a single, simplified application. This change enables faster access to interest-free loans and grants, helping recipients stabilize emergency financial situations and work towards long-term stability.

The new financial aid can take the form of a loan with a 0 percent interest rate, a non-repayable grant, or a combination of the two. The size of the loan is decided on a case-by-case basis, depending on the needs of the service member. Applicants can receive multiple loans if their need is justified and their budget supports repayment.

Notably, Child Care for PCS funding is available for any Airman or Guardian, regardless of rank, who uploads their PCS orders and identification.

AFAS's work often focuses on filling the gap and helping Airmen and Guardians get to a better place when life or exceptional circumstances occur. The organisation partners with military-and-family readiness centers and other organisations to help Airmen and Guardians build budgets and work to regain solid footing.

Last year, AFAS provided over $200,000 for child care support and $4.9 million for emergency financial aid. With the expanded range of financial needs for which aid can be requested, AFAS is prepared to meet an even larger need this year.

These enhancements are part of AFAS's mission to better meet real-life challenges faced by Airmen and Guardians, helping them focus on their missions while ensuring their families receive critical support in times of need.
