Bavarian THW Aids in Fight Against Forest Fires in Thuringia and Saxony
The Technical Relief Agency (THW) of Bavaria has been providing crucial support to firefighters in the states of Thuringia and Saxony since last Wednesday. Approximately 50 personnel from local associations such as Selb, Mellrichstadt, Marktredwitz, Bayreuth, Kirchehrenbach, Forchheim, and Aschaffenburg are currently deployed in the affected areas.
The THW's role includes ensuring smooth and goal-oriented operations, water and fuel supply, drone-based air reconnaissance, and infrastructure setup. High-performance pumps and two water transport containers with a capacity of around 10,000 liters each have been loaded onto the trucks by the deployment forces. These water transport containers ensured the fire-extinguishing water supply for the fire department.
The THW's special unit 'Water Damage/Pumps' is currently on standby, ready to depart for Saxony at short notice if required. A deployment area has been set up to enable the supply of thousands of deployment forces from the fire department and other aid organizations. The Bavarian forces are also supporting catering for around 600 deployment forces.
The mission in Thuringia on the Saalfelder Height has since been successfully completed, but the THW's deployment continues in Saxony at Gohrischheide. The THW's expertise, technology, and experience make it a crucial player in civil protection, both domestically and internationally. The organization is called upon by the federal government in crises, and also provides technical and logistical tasks within the EU's civil protection mechanism and for UN organizations.
