Agriculture authority pursues broadening guava trade market

**Taiwan's Guava Production and Exports on the Rise**

Taiwan's guava industry is experiencing a significant boost, with increased production and expanding exports to key global markets. This surge can be attributed to strategic collaborations, regulatory approvals, and a focus on premium product positioning.

The cultivation of sweeter varieties, such as the Taiwan White Guava, has led to a rise in demand and production. Reports suggest that production volumes have more than doubled in regions growing these varieties over the past five years, indicating strong growth trends.

One of the key factors driving this growth is the recent approval by the European Union's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) to import Taiwanese guavas across all 27 EU member states. This approval ends a lengthy suspension due to concerns over quarantine pests and is the result of compliance with stringent phytosanitary measures, such as steam heating of mangoes and guavas.

To further boost guava's market presence and export volumes, Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture has implemented strategies like partnerships with European retail networks, export incentives, and leveraging cultural and sports events to penetrate local markets. These initiatives are expected to have a positive impact on the industry.

With the EU market now accessible, Taiwan's guava exports are projected to grow steadily. The strategic focus on premium product positioning and expanding retail collaborations provides a strong foundation for increased production scaling and export growth in the near to medium term. Although specific export volumes or growth rates were not quantified, these factors suggest a positive outlook.

Domestically, the Agriculture and Food Agency is aiming to boost sales of guavas. Last year, 1,600 tonnes of guavas were shipped, compared to the current year's exports. Under normal circumstances, the annual guava export volume is approximately 3,000 tonnes.

To promote guavas and their processed products, such as licorice guava or sliced guavas, the Agency is collaborating with major retail chains like PX Mart, Carrefour Taiwan, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart. The distribution of over 1,400 tonnes of guavas is expected from today until September, with an estimated output value of NT$40 million.

The increased production and exports of guavas have led to lower and stabilized prices, making this sweet tropical fruit more accessible to consumers. As the production peak approaches from this month to September, Taiwan's guava industry continues to show promise for both domestic and international growth.

The surge in Taiwan's guava production and expanding exports to key global markets, such as Europe, are fueled by strategic collaborations, regulatory approvals, and a focus on premium product positioning in the food-and-drink industry. This growth in the guava business is anticipated to bolster the lifestyle sector, as lower and stabilized prices make this sweet tropical fruit more affordable for consumers.
