ACWA Power launches Central Asia's largest battery storage project in Uzbekistan
ACWA Power has launched commercial operations at a major battery energy storage project in Uzbekistan. The 334 MW/500 MWh facility forms part of the 200 MW Riverside Solar plant in the Tashkent region. The company also continues expanding its renewable energy portfolio across the country.
The Riverside project, fully owned by ACWA Power, was developed under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Uzbekistan's national grid. Financing for the $546 million installation was secured in 2024. The company handled all engineering, procurement, and construction work for the site.
In October 2024, ACWA Power sold a 49% stake in five large Uzbek energy projects to Sumitomo Corporation. The deal, valued at around $4.2 billion, included 968 MW of battery energy storage systems. Beyond Riverside, the firm is advancing multiple wind and storage schemes in the Karakalpakstan region.
Among these is the Beruniy project, combining 200 MW of wind power with 200 MWh of storage. A larger 1,500 MW onshore wind farm and a 300 MW battery system are also planned for completion by 2027. Additionally, a 2 GWh battery and 1 GW solar plant—paired with 668 MW of storage and 500 km of transmission lines—remain under development.
Globally, ACWA Power manages 113 assets across 15 countries, with a total generation capacity of 96 GW.
The Riverside storage project marks another step in Uzbekistan's renewable energy growth. With ten further wind and storage schemes in progress, ACWA Power's investments are set to increase the country's clean power capacity. The company's ongoing developments include some of the largest battery and wind installations in Central Asia.
