Greens Call for Temporary Pause in Repaying COVID-19 Financial Aid - Activists Call for Temporary Halt on Seizing Funds Amidst Ongoing COVID-19 Crisis

In the Saxon state parliament, the Green faction is pressing for a break in the repayment of coronavirus aid funds. This is due to the financial burden that repayment poses for numerous businesses, which has led to the Greens submitting a proposal currently under discussion with the minority coalition via the consultation mechanism. Previously, similar requests were made by the AfD and the Alliance for Progress (AfP).

It's High Time the State Stepped In

MP Wolfram Günther emphasized, "I hope the state government will finally act on our initiative and listen to the cries for help from business owners." To alleviate pressure, the state government should utilize all possible leeway to help those in need. "It's sheer recklessness if, through rigid repayment regulations, businesses are threatened with closure and the economic diversity of our state is jeopardized," Günther stated.

It's Crucial to Act Now

Günther argues, "It's essential not only to prevent a wave of bankruptcies but also to boost trust in the efficiency and fairness of the state." Swift action is paramount, he contends, as such action will help to strengthen the economy and regain citizens' trust. In support of this stance, the Greens endorse the chambers' call for a moratorium on repayments until the political decision-making process is finalized.

The Economic Ministry has weighed in, informing the AfP that over 66,000 companies have been contacted to participate in the "reporting procedure" for the aid. These businesses must demonstrate how crucial the subsidies were during the pandemic period. If their income turned out to be higher than anticipated, they would be expected to repay the funds.

Businesses Across the State Voluntarily Repay Corona Aid

According to the Economic Ministry, by the end of March 2024, more than 13,600 recipients of coronavirus aid had made voluntary repayments. Additionally, around 2,550 repayments were made following investigations, such as in response to a criminal complaint. Aware of the intended use of the funds, recipients understood that the aid was meant to compensate for the immediate financial hardship brought on by the pandemic.
