Achieving Renewable Energy: Set Goal Completion by 2025

Munich's SWM commences a green energy offensive starting from 2025, aiming to produce an equivalent amount of electricity in their own facilities as the city consumes. This move is in line with the goal set by the city council back in 2009. Yet, SWM's expansion in renewable energy isn't...

Achieving Renewable Energy: Set Goal Completion by 2025

Stadtwerke München (SWM) is set to continue its renewable energy expansion beyond 2025, aiming to contribute to the growing demand for electricity due to the increasing number of electric vehicles and heat pumps. While the specifics of SWM's post-2025 plans are not yet fully outlined, several strategic directions are likely to influence the company's future actions.

One such direction is the expansion of hydrogen mobility. Munich-based hydrogen bus manufacturer Arthur Bus achieved key milestones in 2025, including contracts for hydrogen buses. This suggests that SWM, which has partnerships with Munich’s transport operator MVG, is involved in expanding hydrogen-powered public transportation and related infrastructure, such as refueling stations.

Another focus area is the integration of renewable energies and grid flexibility. The "The smarter E Europe 2025" event held in Munich emphasized the importance of renewable power combined with grid stabilization. As a major energy utility, SWM is likely to focus on further integrating renewable energies, expanding smart grid technologies, and participating in energy communities or peer-to-peer trading to enhance energy efficiency and flexibility.

SWM is also expected to continue expanding its role in sustainable urban infrastructure and multimodal transport systems. Regional initiatives like the GRETA project on last-mile deliveries and multimodal transport workshops in Munich reflect a broader municipal push for sustainability and smart mobility.

In the near term, SWM has announced several new projects. The Zengermoos plant, with an area of nearly 30 hectares, will be the largest photovoltaic plant in Munich's surroundings and can generate 44 GWh of green power per year. The wind farm in Schernfeld, Eichstätt district, with six wind turbines to be built by 2030, is another project in the pipeline. Another wind project in Rammertshofen, Fürstenfeldbruck district, is being implemented by SWM, with the wind turbine to be commissioned in 2026.

SWM's renewable energy expansion has been praised both nationally and internationally. The company's subsidiary Hanse Windkraft has collected around 130 MW of wind energy and has significant repowering potential. SWM's renewable energy plants have contributed an average of 130 million euros per year to the SWM Group's EBIT over the last five financial years.

SWM is also offering services for customers who wish to support the expansion of renewable energy. M-Regional Ökostrom allows customers to contribute one cent per kilowatt-hour towards building new regenerative power plants. M-Solar Plus offers homeowners a complete PV system package, including storage or a wall box for electric cars.

Looking further ahead, SWM is focusing on an expansion project of its English offshore wind project, Awel y Mor, and is applying for a state feed-in tariff this year. SWM aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, five years earlier than the federal government, and is focusing on geothermal energy, decarbonization in transportation, and making the Munich baths operation climate-neutral by 2040.
