Acapulco’s $1B Water Overhaul Targets Earthquakes and Climate Risks
Acapulco’s ageing water infrastructure will undergo a full modernisation, authorities have announced. The overhaul aims to address decades-old vulnerabilities to earthquakes and extreme weather. Efrain Morales, director of Mexico’s National Water Commission (Conagua), confirmed the plan as a joint effort between federal, state, and local governments.
The current system, built in the 1970s, struggles with leaks, poor pressure, and storm damage. To fix this, 46 kilometres of aqueducts in the Papagayo I and II systems will be replaced. The Lomas de Chapultepec aqueduct will also be rehabilitated to improve water flow.
New radial wells will cover 50% of the city’s water demand while boosting quality. Distribution pipelines will be expanded and upgraded to cut leaks and ensure steady supply. Pumping stations and treatment plants will be repaired and enlarged to handle higher volumes. The project goes beyond pipes and wells. Linear parks with playgrounds and pedestrian paths will link neighbourhoods, improving public spaces. Drainage and stormwater systems will be reinforced to withstand hurricanes and flooding. Additional measures include better leak detection, sector-based maintenance, and regular drainage cleaning. Reforestation and waste management programmes will also form part of the plan. These steps aim to make the city’s water network more resilient against both seismic activity and climate risks.
The upgrades will bring earthquake-proofing and climate protection to Acapulco’s water supply. Residents can expect fewer leaks, better pressure, and cleaner water once the work is complete. The project is set to transform how the city manages its water for years to come.
