"A seven-year timeline for sheep" or "Seven-year shepherd plan"
The Central Landfill Hubbelrath GmbH is set to begin the sealing and reclamation of its current site, with the process commencing on April 8. The old site, spanning 27 hectares, has reached its capacity, leaving the need for a new location for the average of 140,000 tons of waste per year.
Jörg Piepers, a seasoned businessman, expects to move closer to the future task area after the office buildings are relocated southwards for the second half of the year. The office buildings are also due for relocation, but no specific date has been announced yet.
The old site will undergo a transformation, with two meters of topsoil being placed on the liner followed by juniper heath. This reclamation process, however, will take several years before sheep can graze on the site.
The Central Landfill GmbH has already invested significantly in the landfill, and the shares are held by Awista Gesellschaft für Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung mbH and Remex Mineralstoff GmbH, a subsidiary of Remondis GmbH. Despite the city of Erkrath's concerns about the lack of waste forecasts in the plan, the company remains optimistic, with Jörg Piepers believing the appeal doesn't have much chance of success.
However, the city of Erkrath has lodged an appeal against the plan approval decision for the landfill. The economic path, used by hikers, will be available again 200 meters further south this year, providing an alternative route during the landfill's transition.
As the Central Landfill Hubbelrath GmbH prepares for this significant change, the community looks forward to the reclaimed site's potential for future use, while ensuring the safe and efficient handling of waste during the transition period.
